Spirit of the Soul

Normally you expect certain standards with an first visit but Toplodge exceeded everything expected.

We have spend 3 days there and was completely well rested and peaceful after our stay. The Cottage is nice and clean and equipped with everything needed. The views and closeness to nature from the Cottage is breathtaking and no TV can make up for that.

The trails caters for everybody from easy to difficult for the more fitter person in an stunning surrounding. The access road to Toplodge is for 4x4's only but Gavin will shuttle you to Toplodge if needed.

Gavin made us feel very welcome and ensured us that they're available and close if needed.

We will definitely go again and will recommend Toplodge to friends and family for a ideal getaway.

#1 getaway for those who wants real peace.

Gavin the by far a fantastic host. The surroundings and accommodation is superb. The history rich farm with the hiking trails will take you on a journey most people only dream about. If you love nature and adventure, this is for you. The road to the top maybe rough for some, but that will loosen you up to a well deserved break, waiting upon those who dare.

Mountain Paradise

We stayed at Toplodge for a week and having visited many places in South Africa I can honestly say that this is the best place I have ever been. Words cannot describe the absolute beauty of this mountain area and the nature and wildlife that goes with it. Gavin and Joan were extremely hospitable, knowledgeable and kind throughout our stay and made us very welcome, even helping us up and down the mountain in their Landrover when the ground was too wet for our 2x4 Fortuner, which was a fun experience! There are many trails around the area of Toplodge which are beautiful and the main Drakensberg National Park is only a short drive away. The Cottage itself is home away from home, where you can relax in front of a real fire and is very spacious and cosy. I can also highly recommend the swing that Gavin has installed over the Dam on the property which is great fun, especially when the Eagles are soaring above you.

Top Lodge - The place you can breath

There are some places on earth where the layer between earth and heaven is at its thinnest and they almost collide... TOP LODGE is one of those places... you can touch, smell and feel peace and serenity.

The chalets are perfect and has everything you need. Gavin is a warm and friendly host!

If you just want to get away from it all - TOP LODGE is the perfect place!

Top Marks

It was interesting to learn that the “T.O.P” of Top Lodge are the initials of the man who fell in love with the area more than 150 years ago, and not because the winding, dirt road (true, real and serious 4X4s only) takes you up, up and up, away from the trammel and clutter of the 21st century. And it is no surprise once at the top of the road, why this place inspired such a great love and passion in T.O.P. The views across the valley to the far, far horizon alone are worth the climb. The profound silence, the drift of mist draping the quietly brooding mountains, the dart of birds across the sky catch your breath. Add to that a cool, spacious, beautifully appointed thatched cottage which brings the views in through wide windows and deepens the silence and seclusion and you have not only a haven, but a heaven too.
