"Peaceful getaway

Toplodge is a hidden gem. There are not many places which give you absolute peace and quiet in an unspoilt location up in the mountains - I have tried to hunt them out over the years, but this is one of the best, and close enough from JHB for a weekend away.

There are only 3 cottages and they are beautifully built -solid, natural, equipped with everything you need (and we are fussy when it comes to kitchen utensils etc) and spotlessly clean. The view and beautiful fireplace is all you need to truly unwind, and there are some lovely walks around.

If you want a resort and entertainment on tap for kids this is not for you. If you want true peace, beauty and nature, this is a haven”.

"The Quiet

My wife and I had the most relaxing three days at Toplodge. The hikes are incredible and Gavin is always willing to go above and beyond. The road is definitely part of the adventure and I would recommend you take an appropriate vehicle. If you don't have one, ask and Gavin will help you out.”

"A piece of Heaven

If you are looking for absolute down time to recharge your batteries this is the place! We stayed in Teakwood, which had uninterrupted views of the Northern Berg. The cottage was immaculate, fully equipped and very clean. The tranquility of Toplodge is something I am already craving, and we only left yesterday! The hiking trails are varied enough to suit all tastes, and if you are just looking for somewhere to rest, relax and recharge then this is it. Gavin, the host, is an awesome and very knowledgeable person. The road from Alpine Heath to the lodge is definitely 4x4 only - and the transfer in Gavin's landy was a lot of fun. Rather leave your car as he suggests and let the expert handle the road. I cannot wait to go back - this lodge is really one of a kind and I sincerely hope it stays this way.”

“Spirit of the Soul

Normally you expect certain standards with a first visit but Toplodge exceeded everything expected.

We spent 3 days there and were completely well rested and peaceful after our stay. The Cottage is nice and clean and equipped with everything needed. The views and closeness to nature from the Cottage is breathtaking and no TV can make up for that.

The trails caters for everybody from easy to difficult for fitter persons in a stunning surrounding. The access road to Toplodge is for 4x4's only but Gavin will shuttle you to Toplodge if needed.

Gavin made us feel very welcome and ensured us that they're available and close if needed.

We will definitely go again and will recommend Toplodge to friends and family for an ideal getaway.”

“Pure pristine natural beauty and tranquility

Toplodge is a real hidden gem, with only 3 units and a genuine 4x4 only track (Gavin will gladly shuttle you up to the lodge if needed) to access Toplodge you are guaranteed a true getaway from the rush of city life.

This is not a big resort type venue with activities, restaurants and TV's, but the pure silence and breathtaking views are all the entertainment you need.

The cabins are wonderfully equipped to a high standard, spacious and comfortable and spotlessly clean! Comfortable warm beds and good quality linen ensure a great night's sleep.

There are 4 very well marked and maintained hikes each offering a different perspective of the natural beauty of the Drakensberg, or enjoy sundowners by the dam, or simply relax on the perfectly manicured lawn in front of your cabin and watch the day go by.

What an amazing place to relax and enjoy some quality family time!”

“Relax in nature

We spent 5 days in Teakwood Cottage and didn't see a person for 5 days! Just walked in the bush, down the Gorge and all over the mountain. Nature included the eland, baboons, jackals and birds. Also amazing yellowwoods and tree ferns. Super relaxing. Thanks Gavin.”

“Solitude

Amazing place tucked in the mountains overlooking a beautiful valley. We spent a weekend in this place which is definitely very tranquil and off the beaten track.

The use of a 4X4 is a must and I would most certainly recommend that you arrive during day light. The road is extremely treacherous when wet. So if possible try and avoid using the road if rain is expected. Correct tyres would obviously be an added advantage if this is unavoidable.

There is plenty of natural wildlife around and some really good walking trails that are a must do.

Gavin is an amazing host and very willing to assist with whatever he can.

His place is certainly highly recommended and we will be returning again.”
